Description
There is a strong connection between persuasive writing in language arts and argumentation in mathematics. Argumentation is a key foundation to all mathematical learning. Like persuasive writing, it requires a rich combination of language and reasoning. Proofs and proving tasks are often affiliated with secondary and post secondary mathematics, but I have found that students in K-5 classrooms are capable of creating very compelling mathematical arguments. This hands-on session is for teachers who wish to infuse more engaging argumentation experiences in their mathematics teaching, but are not sure how. We will explore thinking routines that can be used to explicitly introduce the language and reasoning skills of argumentation and get students excited about mathematics! The open nature of this approach renders it accessible for ALL learners. Please join me in learning about this practical approach to more argumentation in your mathematics classroom.
