Autonomous Learning: A student-centred approach to thematic and inquiry-based learning

In our ever-changing world of education, engaging students with relevant curriculum that will heighten thinking skills is needed to increase achievement and interest. As thematic learning in the intermediate classroom leads into inquiry-based learning at the senior level, students have the opportunity to grow as thinkers and take ownership of their own learning, guided by simple overarching themes and curriculum expectations, allowing for time and depth in the study of course content. This interactive session will promote the transition from thematic course development into inquiry based classroom experiences through accessible, ready-to-use strategies. Not only does this shape student learning as they progress through the secondary years, it allows for flexibility in complexity of reading and writing proficiency from student to student, easily implementing strategies that support de-streaming such as UDL and DI. The end result is visible in high-achieving, engaged learners with heightened critical thinking skills, through an enjoyable classroom experience.
