Moving Beyond a Booklist: Critical Book Selection with an Equity Lens

Presented by Rabia Khokhar

Date, Time, and Room

Thursday, February 19, 20262:45 PM – 4:00 PMChurchill (max. 70)

Description

As educators we have the platform to help our students feel ‘seen’ and represented through the books we choose to intentionally share and teach through in our classrooms. Pre-made booklists can be a place to start as we begin to curate resources but it is important that we move beyond a booklist and ensure our books and resource selection is reflective, responsive and relevant for our student body and school community. In this presentation, attendees will learn how to select resources that affirm and expand their students’ identities and experiences in a contextual and relevant way. As well, the method of ‘critical content analysis’ through an equity lens will be shared and a critical resource selection toolkit. Examples will be shared of how to think critically about our resource selection methods with relevant and practical examples.
