Description

This session explores how to meaningfully embed diversity, equity, and inclusion in Canadian classrooms using The Kids Book of Black History in Canada as a powerful teaching tool. Grounded in the belief that DEI is essential—not optional—in education, we’ll examine how teaching Black Canadian history affirms identity, fosters critical thinking, and fills longstanding gaps in the curriculum. Quoting Desmond Tutu, “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor,” we’ll consider how silence perpetuates inequity and how intentional pedagogy can challenge it. Participants will gain practical strategies to use this resource across grade levels, supporting transformative, joyful, and inclusive learning.
