Dr. Kathleen Hipfner-Boucher is a former French immersion elementary teacher and faculty member at the Université du Québec à Montréal. She is currently a researcher in Dr. Xi Chen’s Multilingualism and Literacy Lab at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. Her work focuses on the metalinguistic and oral language skills that support reading in multilingual children, both within and across languages. While her research focuses largely on the acquisition of English and French language and literacy skills within the context of French immersion, she has been involved in work assessing the language and literacy outcomes of Syrian refugee children in Canada and Germany. Her work has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed journal publications, book chapters, online teacher resources, and early literacy assessment tools for use in French immersion (ÉCLAIR).
